Child labor

In the normal lives of rich children around the world,parents go off to work every day and kids are left to play with friends, do activities and go to school. However, that is not the case for the 218 million child labourers of the world who daily find themselves under harsh, dangerous and exploitative conditions, in which hey have to work in. Globally the majority of child laborers come from the poorer sections of society. Social exclusion and discrimination, a result of poverty and ethnic and gender bias, are important factors that keep children out of school and force them to work. Ending poverty and increasing access to education are therefor crucial tools in the fight against ending child labor.

Child Poverty In Canada

Canada is one of the richest countries in the world. However, about 1,400,000 of its children live in poverty (almost one and a half million). Children of single parents and those of aboriginal backround have suffered the most. Children are poor because they live in disadvantaged families. The way to end child poverty is to allow families the ability to support themselves in a meaningful way. The last thing a parent wants is to have their children go hungry.

Child Poverty

Today, nearly half the world's 6 billion people live on less than $2 a day. Here that would buy you a cup of coffee from starbucks. However, poverty is a reality affecting both rich and poor countries. In developed countries it is estimated that 1 in 10 children live below the poverty line. The situation in developing countries is much worse. In the year 2000 alone, 1.7 million children were needlessly lost because countries around the world failed to reduce poverty levels.

Poverty in Africa

My new topic for poverty is Africa. Did you know, in Africa less than 1 person out of 5 has electricity, out of 1.000 inhabitants 15 have a telephone line, and 7,8 out of 1.000 surf on the Internet. Africa is the poorest continent in the world. The problem in Africa is poverty, which results in other things such as no clean water, no washrooms or schools! Many natural and human made disasters such as famines, droughts and civil wars have hit Africa. Some other problems in Africa are pollution, crime and power (electricity) shortages. In this post my purpose is to raise awareness for world poverty.

What you can do about poverty...

Every one can help with poverty, donate old clothes to a shelter, raise some money or help with a soup kitchen. If you are doing something to help the world in any way*, send me a post and a story about what you did and you may be metioned in my next issue.
*Help the world in any way not just poverty.

Intro

I'm doing a blog about poverty and what I can do now. Over the next few weeks I will be trying to reduce poverty in B.C. and poor countrys by raising money and doing charities.
A list of what I have to do

1. Find who/what I want to support
2. Find a place to donate the money to
3. Make the money.

I picked this topic because I feel all people should have the oppurtunity to have education, work and a family.
